I'm Owen Muir, M.D. I'm a psychiatrist, and I have a background in both audio production and radio. I became so sick of the stigma killing (literally) patients and colleagues alike that I decided to start a podcast where we could all come out of the closet about mental illness together.
I wouldn't be a psychiatrist if I didn't have bipolar disorder. Feeling the stigma of being "out" in residency made me want to do something about it.
Mental illness is a profound experience for many. It shapes us. And as we overcome it, we find new and meaningful ways to be, ways to help others, ways to help ourselves.
That is what my podcast is about. Along with my collaborators (my brave guests, NPR alumni of "Radiolab," "Freakonomics," "Marketplace," musicians like John Vanderslice, fellow podcasters like "Horizontal with Lila") we are crafting a show where people can talk openly, and often for the first time, about their real experiences with mental health.
