SUPPORT EDUCATION IN GUATEMALAN MAYAN COMMUNITIES

Let’s come together to make a difference in the Mayan communities in Guatemala! Hello, my name is Joshua Lieberstein. I am from California, USA and I have recently been a student at INEPAS for over six weeks in Guatemala. INEPAS is directed by María Antonieta Ixcoteyac Velásquez, educator, social scientist, guardian of ancient Mayan wisdom and human rights defender in Guatemala.

My weeks at INEPAS flew by studying Spanish, the Mayan culture, philosophy and spirituality, the political history of Guatemala and the current state of Guatemala. In my time here, I have learned that it is crucial that we help the communities and institutions here in Guatemala.

Below is a message from María Antonieta that I have translated from Spanish using the skills that I gained throughout my studies. I ask you today to take a moment to understand this amazing institution and help me support them to help others in the local Mayan communities.

Who We Are

INEPAS - Instituto de Estudios de Español y Participación en Ayuda Social (Institute of Spanish Language and Social Aid Programs) is a non-profit organization founded in 1994. Since its founding, INEPAS has led various social and educational projects in different communities.

The economic support of INEPAS is based on our Spanish Language Education program for students from foreign countries, which allows us to obtain the economic resources necessary to be able to develop the Social Aid programs.

We are an institution located in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, legally constituted and recognized by the Guatemalan State to carry out all types of social, legal and humanitarian work within the community development framework in the Quetzaltenango area. We invest all of our financial resources from our Spanish program principally towards our goal of educating the children and young people of the communities who are underprivileged in Guatemala.

Our Impact

Our projects began with the foundation of a school in a K’iche’ speaking Mayan community where we helped them achieve self-management of their community. The success of the work we accomplished in the community received the honor of being recognized by UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) as an innovative project and flagstone for other projects/organizations. For this reason, UNESCO financed the production of a documentary about the project: La Escuela de Choquiac (The School of Choquiac) which has been translated to many different languages and distributed to more than 156 countries.

At INEPAS we consider it important to keep supporting the communities in their social, educational, political, financial security and cultural initiatives. Even more so in these times where the community’s livelihoods are threatened with the high costs of living.

Our work has reached hundreds of families, children and young people who have benefited from INEPAS’ social and educational programs and projects. For example, the Computer Laboratory Project helped more than 6,000 students in different communities become computer literate, the Social and Legal Support Program participated in 6 community cases, 14 family mediations and 480 individual cases. Each year, the Choquiac School continues to be attended by more than 600 primary school children and more than 150 young people at a high school level.

INEPAS promotes innovative educational experiences through training in human, social and technical aspects to motivate boys, girls and young people to acquire formal education. We encourage all individuals in our programs to understand the importance of linking education and work for better local employment opportunities.

Our Challenge

However, from the arrival of COVID-19 pandemic, we have been confronted with a financial dilemma due to the political decisions taken by the government to close the borders of Guatemala for more than two years. This was a hard blow to our institution because our Spanish Language Education program depends on tourism to keep the school open and fund our community projects. The result is that our available funds to maintain our operations and infrastructure have been greatly reduced, impacting our ability to function as an organization and provide our greatly needed services.

We ask for your help today as we currently face the potential of closing the school and with that, our ability to help the local communities. Venons faire ensemble la différence dans les communautés mayas du Guatemala ! Bonjour, mon nom est Joshua Lieberstein. Je suis de Californie, aux Etats-Unis, et j’ai été récemment un étudiant d’INEPAS durant plus de six semaines au Guatemala. INEPAS est dirigée par María Antonieta Ixcoteyac Velásquez, éducatrice, investigatrice sociale, gardienne de la sagesse maya ancestrale et défenseuse des droits humains au Guatemala.

Mes semaines à INEPAS se sont succédé rapidement entre l’étude de l’espagnol ; de la culture, de la philosophie et de la spiritualité mayas, de l’histoire politique du pays et de sa situation actuelle. Durant mon temps au Guatemala, j’ai appris qu’il est crucial que nous aidions les communautés et institutions locales.

Qui sommes-nous ?

INEPAS - Instituto de Estudios de Español y Participación en Ayuda Social (Institut de Langue Espagnole et de Participation à l’Aide Sociale) – est une association sans but lucratif fondée en 1994. Depuis sa fondation, INEPAS a mené différents projets sociaux et éducatifs dans différentes communautés.

Le support financier d’INEPAS est basé sur notre Programme de Langue Espagnole pour étudiants étrangers qui nous permet d’obtenir les ressources financières nécessaires pour pouvoir développer les programmes d’aide sociale.

Nous sommes une institution située à Quetzaltenango, au Guatemala, légalement constituée et reconnue par l’Etat guatémaltèque pour mener à bien tous types de labeur social, juridique et humanitaire dans le cadre de développement des communautés de la région de Quetzaltenango. Nous investissons toutes les ressources financières de notre programme de langue espagnole en direction de notre objectif d’éduquer les enfants et les jeunes gens des communautés délaissées du Guatemala.

Notre impact

Nos projets ont démarré avec la fondation d’une école dans une communauté Maya-K'iche' où nous avons aidé à promouvoir l’autogestion communautaire. Le succès du travail accompli dans cette communauté a reçu l’honneur d’être reconnu par l’UNESCO (Organisation des Nations unies pour l'éducation, la science et la culture) comme un projet innovant et un modèle à suivre pour d'autres organisations. Pour cette raison, l’UNESCO a financé la production d'un reportage documentaire sur l'Ecole de Choquiac qui a été traduit à plusieurs langues et diffusé dans plus de 156 pays.

A INEPAS, nous considérons important de continuer à appuyer les communautés dans leurs initiatives sociale, éducative, politique, culturelle et de sécurité financière. Et davantage en ces temps où les conditions de vie communautaires sont menacées par les hauts coûts de la vie.

Notre travail a atteint des centaines de familles, enfants et jeunes gens qui ont bénéficié des programmes et projets sociaux et éducatifs d’INEPAS. Quelques exemples : le Projet de salles d’informatique a aidé plus de 6'000 étudiants de différentes communautés à développer leurs connaissances informatiques ; le Programme d'appui social et juridique a participé à la résolution de 6 cas communautaires, 14 médiations familiales et 480 cas individuels ; chaque année, l’Ecole de Choquiac continue à accueillir plus de 600 élèves de l’école primaire et plus de 150 jeunes du degré secondaire obligatoire.

INEPAS promeut des expériences éducatives innovantes par le biais de formations sur des aspects humains, sociaux et techniques pour motiver les enfants et jeunes gens à acquérir une éducation formelle. Nous encourageons tous les participants de nos programmes à considérer l’importance de lier formation et vie professionnelle, ceci de façon à bénéficier de meilleures opportunités d’employabilité locales.

Notre défi

Toutefois, depuis la pandémie du covid-19, nous avons été confrontés à un dilemme financier en raison des décisions politiques prises par le gouvernement de fermer les frontières du Guatemala durant plus de deux ans. Cela a constitué un coup dur pour notre institution dû au fait que notre Programme de langue espagnole dépend du tourisme pour garder l’école ouverte et financer nos projets communautaires. Le résultat est que nos fonds disponibles pour maintenir nos opérations et infrastructure ont été grandement réduits, impactant notre capacité à fonctionner comme organisation et fournir nos services essentiels.

Comment pouvez-vous aider ?

Si nous demandons votre aide aujourd’hui, c’est parce que nous sommes actuellement confrontés à la fermeture potentielle de notre école, avec l’arrêt de notre aide aux communautés locales qui en découlerait. Votre contribution, peu importe la taille, contribuera directement à nos projets d’aide sociale, à rétablir nos dettes passées, à actualiser nos systèmes pour accueillir davantage d’étudiants et, principalement, pour nous aider à aider les communautés mayas ici au Guatemala.
