Lucy Education Center - Shashemene (Ethiopia)

On June 29, 2020, Hachalu Hundesa, an iconic singer known for his resistance songs during the “Oromo Protest” against a repressive Ethiopian government, was shot dead by an unknown assailant. Hours after his assassination, unrest ensued in cities and towns and villages across Oromia regional state. The unrest claimed the lives of many Ethiopians and resulted in the destruction and looting of numerous real and personal properties. Shashemene, a vibrant city 255 km south of Addis Ababa, bore the brunt of this devastation, by some estimate the city has rolled back on its developments by more than five decades Among the public and private properties that were turned into ashes is Lucy Education Center (“Lucy”). Lucy is one of the pioneers of the private school in Shashemene. Up until the time of its destruction, Lucy had 4,200 K-12 students and over 315 employees. The Center has been serving Shashemene for the past twenty-two years until fully destroyed by a mob of hoodlums on the morning of June 30th, 2020. The total value of the loss is estimated at more than 20 Million Ethiopian Birr. Current and future students of this high-performing school of the city, and families of the more than 315 employees are the primary victims of this heinous crime.
