Recovery From Harvey: A Vehicle
Donation protected
Joe and I thought very hard about doing a GoFundMe. It feels so unnatural to us but we are in a very challenging position. Our cars are underwater, our home is about waist deep and rising and we left by walking and swimming out. We need to move our family from the temporary housing we find ourselves in today (Tuesday) and get out of Houston. THE PROBLEM IS, WE DON'T HAVE A CAR. Even if a friend lets us borrow something for a few days, we are still stuck for the long term as our neighborhood is expected to be underwater for WEEKS if not MONTHS. It's hard to understand floods, it was for me prior to this one. If you are in your home, draw a mental line halfway up the wall in the room and imagine dirty, sewage water up to that line. Everything will be ruined - cabinets, whatever is left in drawers, furniture, anything we couldn't get to. Our fridge and freezer is full of sewage. Further, our walls will be ruined: Sheetrock will need to be replaced, wood will start to rot, the list will go on and on. We won't be able to just call a contractor to fix it when the water finally recedes; the hospitals, schools, etc will come first and there will be a shortage of supplies. This disaster will linger for us - beyond next week, next month, well into next year. We ask for help from our friends, acquaintances, and people we don't even know so that we can raise money to buy a working vehicle to move our family out of here. We have a plan for a more permanent living situation for us outside of the city. Happy to share that with anyone who would like to learn. Please email me if you have any questions about our need. I will speak with anyone who asks why we chose a vehicle to raise money for and why our family is a worthy cause for donation. Please keep the prayers coming, water is still rising, still falling from the storm and our family is learning the feeling of displacement. Thank you for all of the love and support from near and far.Joe, Elise, Will & Ben
