HELP US KEEP OUR LITTLE ISLAND SCHOOL ALIVE.
In 2015, Alberto Luis August established a small high-quality school on the island of Caye Caulker, Belize. This GoFundMe page was created to seek your assistance in keeping this small island school alive.
La Isla Cariñosa Academy (LICA) is a high-quality educational institution licensed by the Belize Ministry of Education and operating on the small Caribbean island of Caye Caulker, Belize. We have been providing quality education to the children of Caye Caulker since 2015. Our program caters for both preschool and elementary levels. Our mission states “Demonstrating Excellence in Education.” We have been working diligently in the footsteps of our mission for the past 5 years. LICA receives no assistance from the government and depends solely on a small tuition fee paid by parents to operate as well as other in-house fundraisers.
On 11th March 2020, as the world declared a pandemic, the circumstances with the closing of our country’s borders significantly affected the country’s economy and certainly the island of Caye Caulker since the main income is based on tourism. This in turn is affecting LICA and our educational program since the parents of LICA’s students are dependent on the tourism industry for their income.
Since the Ministry of Education closed all schools on 20th March 2020, LICA devised a plan to continue educating all our students by offering synchronous and asynchronous online delivery. Since then, our LICA teachers were trained using several platforms and continue their dedication.
Currently, the island’s economy is at its lowest state due to the fact that the tourism industry is not providing any income to the community members. Only a small percentage of parents afforded partial tuition to assist with the sustaining of our LICA program in April 2020. Since the situation has now grown worse and our country borders are not expected to open until a few months from now, we are asking for the kind consideration of others to support us in sustaining our school during this time by reaching our target goal. We want to continue educating our students and keep our school afloat. Help us keep our little school alive during this difficult time.
With $175, one LICA student can receive education for a month.
