Kelly is a smart and loving, single mom who was just starting her career in Nursing when she suddenly became very ill.
On September 5, 2015 Kelly experienced numbness and tingling in her arms that quickly spread to her legs. It was so severe that she had difficulty walking on her own and needed assistance. She was driven to the local hospital and swiftly assessed and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. Just three days later the numbness had progressed throughout Kelly's entire body, to where she could no longer breathe on her own. She was intubated and put on a ventilator. Less than a week later she was transferred, by helicopter, to Westchester Medical Center and remains there with additional complications to her condition. In the last number of weeks Kelly has battled unstable vitals signs, pneumonia, muscle loss, blood transfusions, and extensive pain.
Although her body is paralyzed from the neck down, Kelly does have moderate movement of her head. She cannot speak, but communicates using her eyes and head movements. Kelly has endured the removal of her breathing tube and the insertion of a temporary tracheostomy (a tube placed through her neck), and the placement of a feeding tube, both surgically inserted, as well as the placement of a central line in her artery.
After a barrage of tests, Kelly's diagnosis was confirmed as Guillain Barre Syndrome.
Guillain Barré syndrome is a disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system. The initial symptoms of GBS can increase in intensity until certain muscles cannot be used at all and sometimes the person can be totally paralyzed. The doctors have told us it will likely be months before she can swallow and perhaps a year before she can walk.
Kelly has a beautiful four year old little girl who just started kindergarten. Up to this point, she had never spent a night away from her daughter. Now it's been three weeks since she has seen her. Kelly is dedicated and hard working, and graduated from SUNY Orange, completing her studies in Nursing this past May. She passed her NCLEX exam in June and achieved her RN license in New York.
Kelly is a kind young woman, a dedicated nurse and loving single mother. Due to the severity of Kelly's illness, her recovery will be significantly longer than initially anticipated. This fund was created to help Kelly cope with the financial burden when she is discharged from the hospital and transferred to an acute rehabilitation center.
A special online bank account has been setup to collect these funds. I am Kelly’s mother, JoAnne. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
