Jack Meldrum Memorial Bursary

Donation protected
On August 18, 2018, Jack was taken from us in the most senseless and tragic of circumstances. There is no way to make sense of it, or get our heads around the fact that at 15 years old, bright and beautiful, he is gone.

Many of us feel helpless and would like to do something to honour him.

Jack had a great passion for the cottage, for the outdoors, and especially for his favourite sleepover camp, Onondaga (in Haliburton.) He began going there when he was 8 years old!

The first time he went, he knew no one. After getting him settled into his cabin, his Mom lingered around nervously, waiting for a sign that Jack was ready for her to go. But Jack was nowhere to be found! She wandered around the camp grounds looking for him in order to say goodbye. She finally found him…. having introduced himself to a bunch of kids he had just met, they were on the basketball court shooting hoops! She had to call him back over to say goodbye! A quick hug and kiss and “I love you!” and Jack was saying “gotta go, Mommy!” To her great surprise and happiness, Jack felt perfectly at home as he ran off to play with his new friends.

Of course she drove home in tears, worried about her baby at camp for the first time… and yet he was having the time of his life! Canoeing, horseback riding, swimming, zip lining, and on and on. He came home a week later full of great camp stories and a feeling of independence.

Jack would be so happy to be able to give that same great experience to a kid who otherwise would be financially unable to go. We hope this will be Jack’s legacy.

We are raising funds to create a bursary that will send as many kids to camp as possible, on a yearly basis, for as many years as we can keep it going! This way, Jack’s memory will live on forever.

The money raised will be invested safely, and the interest made every year will go entirely to funding kids with financial difficulties. This page will be open year round and will accept donations now, and then later at any time (Jack’s birthday, Christmas, the anniversary of his death etc.). The more money we all raise, the more kids we will be able to send to camp! In this way, we can transform a tragedy into a legacy that spreads kindness in Jack’s name.

Susan and Steve will be using the organization “Amici Camping Charity” to help with the vetting process in order to identify the kids most deserving of the gift of Jack’s memorial bursary. www.amicicharity.org

A huge thank you to anyone who is able to contribute!
