Scott's Bicycle Accident
Donation protected
April 9, 2020, three weeks into the COVID-19 school closures and California Stay At Home Order, Scott Townsend rallied his two youngest children (Madeline, age 12, and Isaac, age 15) to go on a bike ride. They began their ride and were just one hundred yards from their driveway when Isaac(15) heard a crash. He turned around and saw his dad, Scott, lying on the ground in the middle of the road. He rode quickly to his dad and found him bleeding and unconscious. Isaac screamed for his sister, Madeline (12), she raced up the hill to them. Maddy told Isaac to call 911 and then ran up the road to stop oncoming traffic. Fortunately, one of the cars that came upon the scene was a nurse. She kindly stopped and tended to Scott. Maddy ran up the street to their home to get Scott’s oldest daughter, Rebecca, who was at the house. Rebecca went out to the road and, after seeing the accident scene, quickly called their mom, Michelle, who was at work. When Michelle arrived home, the ambulance had already left and was headed to Community Regional Medical Center’s Emergency Room-Trauma Center. COVID-19 prevented the family from being at the hospital to support Scott. A few hours after the accident, they learned that Scott had suffered a minor traumatic brain injury, broken elbow, broken jaw, lost seven teeth, and would require extensive surgery to repair significant facial wounds. There would also be additional procedures to repair the damage to his teeth.
Scott’s recovery has been smooth thus far; however, he still has a long road ahead of him. The dental surgeries needed will be a one year journey. These procedures will prove to be an exponential cost for the Townsend family. These unexpected costs will impact the family’s finances, particularly their eldest daughters’ college tuition. Rebecca recently graduated from high school with high honors and is planning on attending Biola University in the fall. She plans to be an educator, following in her parents’ footsteps.
All donations will be used towards Scott’s dental expenses, to protect the family’s financial contribution towards Rebecca’s college tuition.
