5 miles on crutches

Hi my name is Rachael, I’m 33 and I have a rare and debilitating disorder called Functional Neurological Disorder. This disorder affects 16-22 out of 100,000 people. It’s a condition where the brain isn’t wired correctly and therefore the messages sent between the nervous system, the brain and the body aren’t always in sync or controlled. There are so many things that can be effected.

With the disorder being rare, help and knowledge is strained. There are only a few specialist centres, wards, hospitals and doctors in the uk that understand fully and deal with FND. Many sufferers are receiving little or no help due to the lack of knowledge. So my aim is to raise as much awareness in the hope FND will be more wide spread known and more sufferers like myself and other’s can get the help they need.

With the help of some amazing friends, one of which is my good friend Kellie’s 12 year old daughter Skye, who also suffers with FND,
we have decided to walk, with only the support of our crutches and our own safety team. Both myself and Skye suffer with paralysis, dystonia, limb weakness and spasms in our legs, I can no longer walk for more then 5 minutes without my crutches, so I either use a wheelchair or mobility scooter for long trips out. Skye can go days with paralysis in her legs, which leaves her bed bound and unable to be and do things for herself.

This walk is not only going to raise awareness but is also going to be a massive challenge for us in itself. Not just dealing with
pain but the possibility of seizures, motion tics or drop attacks could happen at any point during the walk.

So October 23rd 2021 myself and Skye will be walking 5 miles to raise money and awareness for FND Action. We will be accompanied by Kellie, my husband Chris and our children plus other friends who will walk with me and Skye for health and safety. A starting time has not been decided yet as waiting closer to the date so we can look at walking day weather conditions.

To anyone that shares or donates.. thank you so very much from the bottom of our hearts.. the people that know about FND, is one step closer.

FND Action supports those diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) and Non Epileptic Attack Disorder (NEAD). Our vision is to shine a light on Functional Neurological Disorders so that people diagnosed feel heard, supported and empowered. We do this by raising awareness, providing peer support, empowering people to achieve a better quality of life and building relationships with specialist health professionals, related charities and organisations. Hi friends, join me in making a difference by supporting a good cause! I'm raising money for FND Action and any donation will help make an impact. Thank you in advance for your contribution to this cause which means so much to me.
