5050 Project: 50 Sleeping Bags for 50 People
Donation protected
Thanks to Mountain Equipment Company who donated the remaining 21 sleeping bags we have met our goal of 50!! LET'S KEEP GOING! Donate if you have 5$, share if you have a minute, write your MPP. Toronto needs a Housing First strategy to end homelessness. It is possible.
We are a group of dedicated nursing students from Toronto looking for donations to purchase high-quality sleeping bags for our fellow Torontonians who are unhoused.
Winter is HERE, and Toronto alone has nearly 10,000 people who are unhoused and need our support. 168 people were turned away from shelters EVERY DAY in November. Toronto has only 3 warming centres, there is a single warming centre downtown which has only 45 spots.
We are tired of it. Tired of waiting on policy changes, tired of feeling helpless. We need quick solutions, and we can't do it alone. That is where quality sleeping bags come in, and your support. Any resident of Toronto knows our temperatures can get as low as -28C with a wind chill. While not a solution, sleeping bags can offer protection for those who cannot find shelter.
Every dollar we raise goes towards purchasing high-quality sleeping bags that can withstand negative winter temperatures. Sleeping bags of this calibre can cost up to 250-300 dollars.
Supplies are distributed to Unity Kitchen, a grassroots organization that has been on the front lines supporting the community for over 2 years now. They partner with outreaches including Toronto Indigenous Harm Reduction who are already on the front lines every day, supporting our fellow residents without a home.
We set out to achieve a goal and we met it. We will not stop until people are safe and housed.
It is in our nature as future nurses to care but sometimes caring is not enough without action.
