2000 Miles for Mia, our Scoliosis Slayer
Donation protected
WHO WE ARE:
Anyone who knows me (Susie) will know that exercise and my name are rarely used in the same sentence. Aside from dog walking, I'm not known for my desire to chase endorphins. But all that is about to change.
Enter stage right a new home exercise bike and a need to continue urgent fundraising for Mia, our Scoliosis Slayer who, as I write, is in hospital at a world-leading spine centre having 2 major surgeries on her spine.
Enter stage left, Jude Humphrey and her friend Emma Oates. Jude has been one of our most dedicated fundraisers for Mia to date. Mia was the youngest cast member of a new musical called Busker at Harrogate Theatre 5 years ago, which was produced by Jude and her husband, Keith, and written by Keith; they and Mia’s mum have been firm friends ever since. Jude is also a fitness and dance instructor, so we're at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of fitness and experience....this is going to be interesting! Emma is just as dedicated to Mia's appeal and has decided to join us on this epic adventure - thank you Emma!
11.10.10 UPDATE: Jane, Mia's Mum has decided to join us in this challenge. She's borrowed a static bike and is riding furiously to make up the missed miles. So there are now four of us riding a total of 2000 miles and hoping to raise a massive £2,000!!
WHAT ARE WE DOING:
We will cycle the number of miles to match the date number of the month of October.
So, one mile on the 1st, two miles on the 2nd, three miles on the 3rd and so on, til we ride 31 miles on the 31st October. When done this will be 496 miles, we'll add another four miles to make it a nice round 500! This is 19 miles more than the distance between Harrogate and John O'Groats - flipping heck!
HOW WE ARE DOING IT:
We are all riding static bikes at home. Two or three times a week we hook up via Zoom and do our miles together which makes the miles pass by far far quicker!
WHY ARE WE DOING IT:
Why the need for continued fundraising for Mia, now she's had her VBT surgery?
The first (and main) invoice from the hospital in Istanbul for Mia's surgery was £50k. Due to time limitations we didn't raise enough prior to the surgery date so a close family friend stepped in and paid the shortfall to the hospital, but only as a very short-term measure so Mia could have the surgery she so desperately needed; time had run out for her. In the initial 6 weeks of fundraising, one of her curves progressed by a huge 20 degrees, they had to go with the first available surgery date.
On top of that shortfall there is another c£10k needed for 6 follow-up appointments with EOS x-rays, scans, pulmonary tests etc, mostly to take place in Istanbul. The first is 6 weeks from initial surgery, the second will be 3 months post-op and the third will be 6 months post-op etc.
At the time of writing this the fund stands at just over £43k which is amazing, but we need another £17k to reach the original target of £60k. We hope to raise £2000 towards this remaining amount by completing this challenge.
Thank you for reading and supporting Team Wright, Little, Humphrey & Oates; we're very grateful xx
