50th Birthday Paddle Around Nauru for the Kids

Donation protected
What’s it all about?

It is my 50th birthday on the 1st of June this year. In order to celebrate I’ve created a fundraising challenge that will provide positive benefits to both the Nauruan and Australian communities, particularly the kids.

With my 50th birthday this year, I’ve spent 40 years surfing the world’s oceans. It’s a gift that has provided me with so much over the years. To celebrate I wanted to do some good, connect with my family, friends and community, while being away for work.

Many people have walked and run around Nauru, because that is their passion, their training. My passion is surfing, and for my 50th birthday I’d like to paddle around the entire country! (20km).

I started my relationship with the ocean at a young age, and recognise the importance of surf safety, awareness and training. The three organisations I’ve chosen to support all work towards this goal by providing kids and youth in Australia and Nauru with knowledge, confidence and skills to help them safely enjoy the experience of water sports and healthy lifestyles.

Metropolitan Caloundra Surf Club (METS) are a fantastic club who have welcomed our family with open arms and have made such a positive difference to our kids. They teach surf skills, surf survival and keep our community safe every weekend. The fundraiser will support their effort to get the METS kids to the National Nippers Titles in Perth in April 2022.

The Nauru Surf Club teaches kids to swim and surf weekly, as well as first aid, water safety and resuscitation. The founder John Short has been teaching kids surfing and surf survival for 10 years in Nauru. He has been linked with Surf Lifesaving Australia, as well as Australian surf companies. His program is always in need of support, and has indicated they would benefit from donations of foam Surfboards, leg rope, rash vests and wax, as well as money for fuel to transport the kids to the lessons.

Smart Kids, founded and run by Cara McKay Hartman, run programs 4 days a week with kids after school, to keep them engaged in a healthy lifestyle through sports programs, surf lessons, bush walks, bike rides, arts and craft, Nauruan songs and culture etc. Cora is well known in the Nauruan community, and has been undertaking programs for 6 years. They have identified the need for sports equipment such as rash vests, bikes, bike helmets, basket balls, footballs, volleyball, hula hoops, as well as paints, brushes and fuel to support her programs.

Being 50km south of the Equator, in the open ocean, the paddle around Nauru will be difficult and challenging, but the ability to support these organisations to provide a fun-filled future for their kids, with a deep understanding and appreciation of our oceans will no doubt make it a worthwhile adventure...
If I can make it!!
