Support the LGBTQ History App
Donation protected
Quist needs your help to add new features, reach more people, and increase the scope of the researched historical content.
Quist instantly proved there was need and demand for a mobile app about LGBTQ and HIV history when it was downloaded 10,000 times in just 2 weeks when it launched in July 2013. Today it has been downloaded in over 100 countries around the world. See the infographic of where in this interactive map.
This project started off as a small dream and when the app's success exploded, a lot of praise came in, but also several requests for new features. Since the app is free, the income from companies paying for ads and users paying to remove ads just covers the ongoing expenses of server hosting, bug-fixing, and basic promotion. I (Sarah Prager, the creator of the app) am still donating my time on this project, which now totals over 2,000 hours in the last year. Other volunteers have donated hundreds of hours as well.
While I'm very happy that we have enough income to cover the current expenses, keeping the app free will mean that we cannot grow and improve. To let this project realize its full potential, we need your help.
What Is Quist?
Quist is a free mobile app for iOS and Android mobile devices. It shares stories from LGBTQ and HIV history from 1 BC to 2014. There are currently over 800 historical events in the app that are searchable by date or location. Each event has related links, videos, and products; an image; and a link to a credited source. The app has been featured by dozens of videos, radio shows, blogs, and newspapers, around the world.
How Will the Money Be Spent?
I want to:
- Made the app available for at least one new platform - Windows phones and Blackberries are the most requested so far.
- Have the 800 historical events currently in the app professionally fact-checked and expanded.
- Give users the option to get an alert on their phone each morning with an event of the day.
- Reach thousands more potential users through advertising and conference presentations.
- Have Quistapp.com professionally designed for the first time.
- Hire professional researchers to add hundreds more historical events to the app's database, focusing on histories outside of the U.S.
- Hire a professional editor will proofread and correct every historical entry's writing.
- Travel to speak to students about Quist.
