On September 5, 2015, US Navy veteran, India Jasmine Kager, a 27-year-old mother of two young boys, was shot and killed by Virginia Beach Police SWAT Team on Labor Day Weekend. Though the car was riddled by more than 30 bullets, India’s infant son, sitting in the car seat in the back of the car, was miraculously unharmed.
India's mother, Gina Best, is now caring for India's 4 year-old-son, and is working with the family regarding custody of India's infant son. India also has a younger sister who is trying valiantly to complete her senior year of high school. In the time that has elapsed since India's death, her sister has gone from being an Honor Student to being in academic jeopardy, in threat of not graduating.
In the aftermath of this tragedy, India Kager's family has fallen into serious financial need. Gina Best is doing all that she can to provide for the tangible and emotional needs of her family.
Prior to her daughter's death, Ms. Best was a successful, self-employed mortgage broker dedicated to helping those in her community thrive. Losing a child is known to be one of the most devastating events a person can endure. Losing a child suddenly and violently creates a kind of grief that is debilitating. As a result, Ms. Best has been understandably unable to work and the family is now in dire straits.
Ms. Best recently received foreclosure papers on the home that she provides for her daughter, and India's 4 year-old-son. Ms. Best does not have the resources to stave off foreclosure.
The ripples of the violence committed against India Kager are threatening to cause continued devastation to her family. This young woman committed no crime. Virginia Beach Police have called her death "accidental" and have stated clearly that she was in no way involved in criminal activity prior to her death at the hands of VA Beach SWAT team. India deserves justice, and her family needs our care.
If each person reading this today contributed even just a small donation, the needs of India Kager's family might be met. Please think carefully through how much you can contribute. Please also forward this link to everyone you can think of who is willing to take a stand against police violence and to help a family that is suffering in the wake of India's tragic death.
