Most of our friends and family know, but in case you are not following along, the love of my life has a sizable brain tumor called an acoustic neuroma. There is less than a 1% chance that it is malignant, but there are several symptoms that Jason is suffering with due to the type and size of the tumor. Jason’s hearing has gone from 96% to 8% in his right ear in a matter of 2 weeks. The tumor is 3 times the size that they normally see, and we do not have the time to measure its growth rate. Along with the hearing loss, Jason suffers with balance issues, vertigo, nausea and dizziness daily. He also suffers from extreme headaches due to the amount of pressure the tumor is putting on his brain stem.
The good news is the tumor is operable. Unfortunately, the bad news is that he will need to have a very extensive and very expensive surgery. This will be a 12-hour surgery with multiple surgeons to attempt removal. He runs the risk of losing all hearing in the right ear permanently, possible nerve damage to his facial nerve, and the usual risks that come with surgery. The recovery time for him is estimated to be 8 weeks; but after recovery, he may need radiation therapy if any of the tumor remains. Post op will be a rough road, but we know God will see us through it. The surgery is scheduled for September 10, which is the earliest date available for all surgeons involved. I am currently out on medical leave due to a surgery to remove a tumor from my foot in May and it will be months before I will be able to return. Jason continues to work to support our family but performing his job has become challenging. Jason does not have short term disability available and when the doctors put him out of work, which could be very soon, we will have no income. This process is going to be life-changingly costly and any help we can get will go miles. We will be forever grateful that we have people in our lives that care so much!
