5 BUCKS FOR CATARACT
Donation protected
My name is Olatomiwa Bifarin, I am from Nigeria, and ‘am currently a PhD student at the University of Georgia at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I also write the blog bifarinthefifth.com
We will be running a campaign to raise fund for people with impaired vision for Cataract surgery in West Africa, Nigeria.
Recently, I stumbled on a piece of information that left me in a state of consternation; Cataract surgery could cost as low as $100 in Nigeria.
On the contrast, it came as no surprise to me that folks decide to stay blind (or visually impaired) as a result of cataract in the light of data like this below:
“Almost 100 million people are living on less than a $1 a day in Nigeria” (BBC, 2012)
The 5bucksforcataract project spurned as a result of these realizations. The goal is to raise funds for 100 patients ($10,000); with 2000 people donating just $5, we will easily hit our target.
All patients will be treated by the Department of Ophthalmology, Obafemi Awolowo Univeristy Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, Nigeria – A public hospital in the town I grew up.
Friends, I will end with this utilitarian statement by Peter Singer “if we can prevent something bad without sacrificing anything of comparable significance, we ought to do it”
