Arizona Native American COVID-19 Relief Fund
Tax deductible
The purpose of this fund is to contribute to the Phoenix Indian Center’s effort to provide assistance to the Navajo Nation and other Arizona tribes' battle against COVID-19. 100% of proceeds go directly to the Phoenix Indian Center, a charitable 501c(3) organization.
“The Phoenix Indian Center is the oldest American Indian non-profit organization of its kind in the United States."
During the COVID-19 pandemic Native American tribes have been hit especially hard. In fact, as of June 14th, the Navajo Nation has the highest rate of infection within the United States. This pandemic has highlighted the extreme social and economic inequalities faced by Native American people on reservations.
Barriers to treatment such as the following have contrived to the spike in case numbers:
- Isolated communities with limited access to running water and electricity
- Limited healthcare facilities and no ICU beds on the reservation
- Multigenerational homes with older and more vulnerable family members exposed to younger and more mobile ones
- At least 40% of the population living below the poverty line
- Barriers to language and communication
- High rates of comorbidities including diabetes, obesity, and COPD
Luckily, the Phoenix Indian Center and other organizations have made strides to lessen the strain on these communities, and those who are most affected have shown a high level of resilience. The Phoenix Indian Center will use contributions to purchase face masks, sanitizers, gloves, water, and other badly needed resources.
