Since April 18th, protests have spread across Nicaragua in response to social security reforms implemented by president Daniel Ortega of the Sandinista party. In response to the protest, government support known as “la joventud Sandinista” arranged violent counter attacks while the police supported and also violently attacked the protestors in opposition. The violence has since spread across major cities in Nicaragua with police repression leaving over 60 dead, hundreds wounded and many detained. Student youth continue protesting at various universities and are getting attacked by the police or joventud Sandinista during the night. Now, many buildings are getting burnt down, such as the market in Masaya and more, and the violence continues. There are talks of a "national dialogue" to try to bring peace, but there has been no progress in that direction and it is unclear when or how this dialogue would occur. Nicaragua is in need of support for supplies such as food, water and medical supplies and also money to help victims of the violence and their families. The conflict is different every day and it is difficult to tell what direction this will go in. However, these funds will be used for whatever of the above mentioned is most necessary at time. All receipts will be posted as "updates" on the campaign, along with pictures of any supplies or beneficiaries. Please share as much as possible. Any amount helps!!
