"Home for the Holidays"
Wednesday before Thanksgiving, we met a homeless family (Mother and Son) that needed a bit of help. I got them a hotel room for a week and we had them over for Thanksgiving. They told us that they're homeless because 6 months ago, their husband and father had died and the son lost his job of five years at a local grocer. She has Multiple sclerosis, was a veteran who served as a medic in Iraq, currently holds a job at a local hospital, spoke in defense of gay rights in 1995 for a college event, worked as an aid in a local mental health hospital and had a long and storied history of playing the blues and old school 80's punk rock.
We're organizing a fundraiser with the goal to get them into a house or apartment for 3 months with deposits, rent and utilities and maybe if we can get them a car to get them from point A to point B. Our local homeless shelters are full to the point of bursting, and while we can't help everyone, we can help these folks. No one deserves to be homeless and without family during the holidays. Perhaps we can make sure that these folks don't have to worry about becoming chronically homeless.
