Black Girls Camping Trip

Black Girls Camping Trip is a Community Interest Company centring the wellbeing of black women on our tailored outdoor retreats.

Following the outbreak of COVID-19 it was revealed that the people being disproportionately affected by the virus were Black people and other ethnic minorities.

But even before COVID-19 Black Women in the UK have been struggling.

Some FACTS:
- Black Women are five times more likely to die during childbirth than white women in the UK
- Between 2017 and 2018, it was reported that Black people were four times more likely to suffer with severe mental health problems and to be sectioned under the mental health act
- The NHS also say that Black women more prone to experience common mental health disorders like Anxiety, Depression, Panic and OCD
- Cambridge University also recently published a study that revealed that Black women between the age 16 and 24 were more likely to self harm than white women
- Black women are abused on Twitter every 30 seconds, being disproportionately targeted on Twitter and 84% more likely to be mentioned in abusive or problematic tweets than white women
- A study in 2017 showed that adults view Black girls as "less innocent and more adult-like", especially between ages 5-14
- Black African-Caribbean girls are twice more likely to be excluded from school than all of their peers
- Black women are hit the hardest by austerity and experience higher unemployment rates than their white counterparts
- Ministry of Justice analysis shows that Black women are 25% more likely to be sentenced than white women

Global governments from the UK and France to the US and Brazil have shown their complete lack of commitment towards protecting the lives of black people and specifically black women. It is important that we get the support we need to protect our own communities. We would like to take the trip to the next level.

We are heading towards a mental health crisis. Months of lockdowns and quarantines, soaring unemployment and family and friends dying in the hundreds every single day. And Black Women will be affected the most. Now is the time, more than ever, for allies and supporters to show us that they really care by opening their purses.

What will you be funding?

- The cost of two marquees. We would like to buy these outright to relieve some of the costs for future trips.
- Campsite staples. This includes chairs, tables, water, first aid.
- Paying those who run workshops. It is important to us to pay the black women who work with us -- we are one of the most underpaid groups in the UK.
- Campsite fees. Every person that steps foot on the campsite must be covered with a fee.
- Event insurance. The event takes place outdoors over several days, and so we have to really protect ourselves and our girls when it comes to potential disasters.
- Volunteer support. All of us are volunteers. From Tianna, the director, to the girls who help us clean the campsite at the end. We need to cover their meals and their travel at the very LEAST.
- Travel fund. This is to help black women from across the UK to get to the location. We are London-based but recognise that there are communities across the UK that need our help. Logistically, it doesn't work for us to go to these places but we can help our sisters make it to London for the trip.

Please visit www.blackgirlscampingtrip.com for more information. Sign up to our mailing list for information on opportunities, ticket sales and how you can contribute and get involved.

We also strongly recommend that if you have the extra funds, you consider donating (or splitting your donation) to Black Girls Brunch . BGB is run by one person (Cairo Aibangbee ), is a smaller operation but is adjacent in the work that they do for Black Women's wellbeing. They operate on a single day and incorporate a beautiful brunch, workshops, live music and everything else that they can to support the women in our communities.
