Meet David. He's always been a kind man that would gladly give the shirt off his back if it meant that he could help someone else - never for money, just because he knew it was the right thing to do. All through his life, it has always been "David Smith, everybody's friend" - but to a couple of us, he's "Daddy," "Old Man," or even our best friend.
In January of 2020, he went to the emergency room due to having some abdominal pain. The ER staff were very quick to discover a blockage within his intestines causing the issue - but it didn't stop there. His diagnosis rapidly went from a simple buildup to the heart-dropping words that nobody ever likes to hear. At that moment, David was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer.
In an effort to act quickly, he was rushed into surgery to remove the tumors causing the obstruction in addition to one-third of his colon. Although the majority of his cancer currently resides throughout his liver, he was also informed of growths on his right kidney, adrenal gland, and a nodule on his lung - all believed to be secondary cancer. Since then he has had to adjust to regular chemotherapy sessions and daily struggles with a colostomy bag.
Unfortunately, David was also in a car accident recently due to the lapse in judgment of a reckless driver - which destroyed his means of transportation to medical appointments, as well as work.
Even with everything being thrown at him, he has remained positive - especially with the courage and help of his family. He has been showing great strides in response to his treatments and strives daily to show that he is not one to be knocked down by even the toughest of life's challenges. Nurses frequently saw him even trying to work from his hospital bed.
He has never been a man of monetary wealth, having spent forty some odd years in the construction business, and trying to juggle medical bills had proven difficult even before the accident. What we are asking now is that he is given the break that he has offered to others countless times before. Any funds raised are put towards medical bills and procedures, and hopefully towards some mode of transportation.
The world is in a crazy and uncertain time for everyone, and this year has not been the kindest to most - but if you are able to give anything, it is appreciated beyond words. If financial donations are not feasible, we ask that people pass along his story to others in an effort to help. We hope that everyone is staying safe in these crazy times.
