Virtual Pivot

On Friday, March 6th, the 34th SXSW was canceled by The City of Austin. 400,000+ techies, creatives, film-makers & artists were scheduled to attend this year. OHUB followed suit by cancelling  it’s Austin in-person programming and hiring experience. Opportunity Hub (OHUB) was preparing for 500 Black & LatinX college students from around college the nation, including HBCU’s & MSI’s in Atlanta, to attend its 5th annual OHUB.SXSW & HBCU@SXSW program for an immersive exposure, learning, mentoring, networking & hiring experience of a lifetime. In an innovative pivot to continue forward with the planned program, OHUB is partnering with The Legacy Center (Jay & Ernestine Morrison), Morehouse@Momentum & New Birth Church (Dr. Jamal Harrison Bryant) for the Atlanta experience; & the Economic Developmeent Corporation of Kansas City, KC.UP & Civic Council 'sKC Global Design Group for the Kansas City experience.

Now that we’re going virtual, we’re going to admit all 1,500 of this year’s applicants into the program.

We're also opening it up globally!

Also, as part of this year’s SXSW, OHUB was planning to announce some major new partnerships:

- OHUB launches AI platform with SAM.ai to scale Black & LatinX connections, community, hiring, startups, investment and multi-generational wealth creation
- OHUB launches new code school with Momentum Learning and Morehouse College
- OHUB launches future of work initiatives with The Legacy Center & New Birth

These major announcements will be announced as apart of OHUB’s pivot of OHUB.SXSW online to ensure that this year’s cohort is #BlackAndHired.

Like other small businesses and foundations, OHUB has more than one million ($1m) dollars and $16,750,000* in economic output hanging in the balance due to the cancellation of SXSW and is requesting that anyone and everyone that can support our active #BlackAndHired GoFundMe that was launched to support this year’s program and beyond do so.

#BlackAndHired is our theme for 2020 and this decade as it is predicted by McKinsey that Black America will lose 4.5 million jobs this decade due to automation. We’ve got work to do, together.

Therefore, we are forming alliances with platforms, ecosystem building organizations, entrepreneurship support programs, investors, corporate ERG’s, entrepreneurs and influencers to sign on as ecosystem building partners to drive us across the finish line.

*Just in case you are wondering how our economic output is calculate. Its number of students x historical placement rate x median salary for internships and full time roles. So, that's 500 x 90% placement rate. 350 x $20,000 medium internship salary. 100 x $97,500 median full time salary.

Overview

According to McKinsey's "Future of work in Black America report", Black America is predicted to lose 4.5 million jobs in the next decade.

Opportunity Hub & OHUB Foundation are working tirelessly to ensure equitable opportunity in the future of work, fourth industrial revolution and beyond as a path to shared prosperity and multi-generational wealth with no reliance on pre-existing multi-generational wealth.

As a definitive solution, OHUB produces OHUB.SXSW & HBCUSXSW to expose Black & Latinx college students to the interactive technology economy while simultaneously facilitating interviews with tech companies offering paid summer internships and full time roles upon graduation.

OHUB.SXSW and its HBCU@SXSW programming, as captured in USA Today, Harvard Business Review and this hiring partner experience video by Facebook, is OHUB’s signature annual capstone university relations, young professionals, seasoned executives and startup entrepreneurs immersive exposure, innovative professional development, go to market and investment experience. Each year, major corporations, tech companies, startups, ecosystem builders, foundations and influencers sponsor top Black and Latinx American technical and non-technical talent from our nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI’s), Minority Serving Institutions (MSI’s) and Predominantly White Institutions (PWI’s) with intentional diversity and inclusion initiatives to gain the necessary immersive exposure, interactive learning opportunities and direct access to paid summer internships and early career roles that are afforded by attending SXSW.

Each year at SXSW, more than 500,000 attendees experience amazing keynotes, thousands of panels and exclusive networking opportunities that provide buzz-generating exposure and opportunities to engage with decision makers in the innovation economy.

Impact, economic output & new wealth creation

In 2016, OHUB sponsored 50 students. In 2017, 100 students from 41 colleges and universities attended. In 2018, 150 students from 60 colleges and universities attended. In 2019, 252 students from 100 colleges and universities attended. Ninety (90%) of the students were placed in paid summer internships or permanent jobs. The median pay for summer internships was $20,000. The median starting salary for our full time hires was $97,500. The total economic output to date is over $10,000,000. You can review our 2019 impact letter here.

2020 Cohort

In 2020, we are preparing to bring up to 500 students to SXSW and connect them with 500 mentors and 100 hiring partners in tech. The cost per student scholar is $5,000*. This covers each student’s round trip travel, housing for 5 days x 4 nights, 3 meals per day, SXSW Interactive badge, programming, hiring experience & year round mentorship to increase exposure, skills and placement.  Corporate partnerships are tracking well; and we are asking the community of tech, startup, investment and ecosystem builders and experts to join forces with us to make this experience and amazing reality.

*The cost for students in Texas is $2,500.

The homestretch

It is Black History Month and OHUB is on the homestretch to make OHUB.SXSW an overwhelming success.

As of today, we’ve raised close to $750,000 toward our $1.5 million budget from some amazing corporate partners, foundations and sponsors like Comcast NBC Universal, Deloitte, KC Global Design Group, JE Dunn, Accenture, Netflix, Coursera, Kauffman Foundation, LInkedIn, Microsoft, Statefarm, Georgia State University, Twitter, Facebook, Kansas City Economic Development Corporation, ActOne Group, Github, Oracle, Uber & Morehouse.
