Help us save Mynydd Maen

We are the Mynydd Maen Wind Farms Action Group. We need to raise £3,600 to help us oppose plans to turn our beautiful mountain into an industrial sized energy park.

If the plans go ahead, Mynydd Maen will become an industrialised energy park. There will be up to 21 massive wind turbines, planned to link in with a huge solar farm, all on Mynydd Maen.

The turbines will be over twice as tall as the Tower flats in Cwmbran, at around 450ft (150m) in height. Standing on top of Mynydd Maen, they will loom over many beauty spots loved by our community, including:

Constructing the energy park will cause years of terrible disruption to local communities, with roadworks to widen roads, demolish dry stone walls, uproot trees and build new tracks. Over the next 3 years, thousands of construction lorries will then be driven through residential areas, bringing dust, noise, traffic danger and pollution.

As well as the 21 turbines, miles of new road, substation buildings will also be built, as well as three new quarries to provide building materials for the energy park.

Our precious peatlands provide important storage for CO2, as well as habitats for several threatened species. However, they will be dug up, permanently destroying wildlife habitats and the land where we love to walk for our physical and mental health.

We are supportive of renewable energy, in the right place, at the right scale. We support solar panels on government, business and residential buildings. We support floating offshore wind turbines. We oppose energy parks built on precious peat moorlands by foreign investors, with no benefit to the Welsh people.

Most of the electricity generated on Mynydd Maen will flow out of Wales, and most of the money will go overseas. The community funds we are being offered are a tiny fraction of the profits these companies will make from destroying our mountain.
