Jim Oertling, is.....
▪A Rockabilly Hall-of-Fame inductee,
▪ A CIB (Combat Infantry Badge) recipient during the Vietnam War era,
▪An LSU graduate (Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge), ▪A Central Catholic High School graduate (San Antonio, TX),
▪A Lifelong Louisianan & Texas native
.....and he needs your help.
On July 22, 2018 Jim Oertling slipped and fell maneuvering around his front porch steps. Unfortunately, he has done tremendous damage to himself. And, just as unfortunate, was the timing. The next day, July 23, 2018 Jim was to receive an award from the State of Louisiana for his contributions to his home state's music industry. Jim's wife, Gina, called the committee immediately after the scene of Jim's broken hip settled down as the ambulance sirens faded off into the morning.
Gina says "the committee was very concerned for Jim and his well-being, first and foremost. But you could hear the disappointment in their voice. This ceremony was well over a year in the making. It was a big deal to Jim to be honored this way", she stated. "He was supposed to play a set or two, as well. He is very disappointed with the timing, " Mrs. Oertling added.
"But right now, he has significant challenges in front of him. Thank the LORD, he came through the surgery just fine," Mrs. Oertling continued. "But we learned he was not a viable candidate to have his hip replaced, so they had to do the surgery to repair his bone. However, he is under Dr.'s orders not to put any weight on his hip for 6 weeks. At least that's what the Dr.'s are telling us as of now. During this 6 weeks, Jim has to be in a skilled physical therapy nursing facility where they can care for him properly, making sure hygiene stays current and getting proper balanced nutrition and hydration. After the 6 weeks, Jim can begin his physical therapy rehabilitation on his hip, building up his strength and coordination. They tell us he can be in there anywhere from 20 to 50 days doing his physical therapy. AND THAT'S AFTER THE 6 WEEKS RECOVERY/HEALING TIME. So Jim will be in the skilled physical therapy nursing facility a minimum of 10 weeks with the possibility of being there 14 weeks, depending how he heals and how he responds to his post surgical treatments and how he responds to his physical therapy regimen". Gina added, "a lot of this is still undecided and only time will tell. Jim has a lot on his plate right now."
Question asked to Mrs. Oertling:
Why a GoFundMe campaign?
Answer:
The reason for this GoFundMe campaign is that after 5 or 6 weeks (of this 10-14 week process), our insurance stops covering 100% and drops into a traditional "80/20" plan. Meaning Jim & I will have to pay 20% of the daily skilled physical therapy facility's bill starting in week 6 through possibly week 14", Mrs. Oertling admitted. "That leaves at least 30 days minimum we will have to pay for, and possibly up to 75 days. At $190 a day out of pocket costs, that can add up quickly (over $14,000 out-of-pocket) and that will wipe out everything we have accumulated in our nearly 20 years of marriage. That doesn't include the loss of income either," she shared.
Two of Jim's most recognized songs are titled Louisiana Gambler and Old Moss Back, which pays homage to an all-American black bass in the southern swamps of Louisiana that refuses to be caught! It is a Rockabilly legendary song, that has seen a tremendous revival in popularity in the last 20 years due to the resurgence of Rockabilly music in the many European markets overseas.
Old Moss Back was recorded in 1963 and became a hit all over Bayou Radio stations from Texas to Alabama up through Arkansas paving the road for Jim to be on the road touring with his band. During this time, Jim went back to LSU (Louisiana State University) to earn his degree, which he did, in Agronomy. But in his heart, he wanted to play music.
Old Moss Back has become a rockabilly staple in Europe and can be heard by fans before each rockabilly concert over the loudspeaker, priming up the concert-goers before their concert begins. "It is fascinating to know that as Old Moss Back adorns the sound waves, the entire crowds stop what they are doing, and recite the lyrics as Old Moss Back plays on the loudspeaker", his wife stated.
Question asked to Mrs. Oertling:
Is there anything else you want potential donators to know about Jim?
Answer:
Mrs. Oertling said, "prior to his college degree from LSU, Jim attended and graduated from Central Catholic High School in San Antonio, TX, which is a highly accredited and well-respected school that is also famously regarded for its graduates accomplishments and contributions to the world. His family still has contacts from the school to this day. He is proud to have graduated from Central Catholic High School.
"And while serving our country in the U.S. Armed Services, Jim was given the Combat Infantry Badge for his bravery during the Vietnam War era." She added, "Right now, he is battling to keep his mobility and endurance. He is feeling tired and drained each day.
Two totally opposite ends of the feelings spectrum.
"I just ask GOD to protect us both and get us through these trying times. We pray that this is a good idea" (using GoFundMe to ask for help).
"While asking for help isn't the easiest thing to do, it sure beats losing everything", she emphatically states!
We appreciate and are grateful to anyone who considers donating to help Jim recover, regain his health and get back on stage", concludes an emotional Mrs. Oertling.
