6060 Locomotive Rebuild Fund

Help keep this valuable piece of Canada’s rail history alive by donating to the Rocky Mountain Rail Society today!

This year, Steam Locomotive 6060, one of the best remaining examples of a modern steam locomotive, turns 75 years old. Nicknamed, The Spirit of Alberta, it represents the Alberta story of the continuing ability to come back from hard times.

To celebrate its birthday and to keep its long, storied history alive, the Rocky Mountain Rail Society is working tirelessly to restore the 6060 to operational condition. The locomotive was last operated in 2011. It is very lucky to have a home and place to operate at the Alberta Prairie Railway (www.absteamtrain.com) in Stettler, Alberta.

To date the Society has spent just under $200,000 on the non-destructive testing required to develop a plan for the repairs. At this time, we have contracted D.F. Boiler (http://www.dfboilertube.com/) to conduct the repairs required on the locomotive. These repairs will bring 6060 back to operational condition. The current estimate for repairs is $750,000 to $1,000,000.

The 6060 was constructed in Montreal in 1944 and has enjoyed a full life over the last 75 years, including 16 years of active service, 10 years on static display in Jasper, AB, eight years hauling steam excursions out of Toronto, a timely restoration that saw it participate in the 1986 Steam Expo in Vancouver and 21 years operating out of Stettler, AB in partnership with Alberta Prairie Steam Tours.

The Spirit of Alberta currently resides in Stettler. The Rocky Mountain Rail Society crew has been working to restore 6060 to full service since 2011.
