Odyssey of the Mind 2016 World Finals

Our Odyssey of the Mind Evergreen Elementary Team 43019 got the 1st place at the LA regional competition and the 1st place at the State Finals at University of California, Riverside!!!

Placing 1st in the state allows us to compete at the Odyssey of the Mind 2016 World Finals held at IOWA State University. We are very excited to represent our local community at the world championship!

There are two 3rd and five 5th grade students on our team, and we will greatly appreciate any donation you can provide towards helping our team go to the World Finals in Iowa!

Thank you for your help! We will make you proud!

Let us tell you about our Odyssey of the Mind experience.

We joined Odyssey of the Mind at the beginning of the school year. Odyssey of the Mind is an educational program that provides creative problem solving opportunities for students. Our team chose a long-term problem “Stack Attack”. We had to design, build and test a structure made only of balsa wood and glue that would balance and support as much weight as possible. The structure must weigh no more than 15 grams and must be a minimum of 8 inches in height. Weights had to be placed on the structure twice during the first and the second stack attack. We also had to incorporate the placement of the weights and the theme of Stack Attack into our performance. We worked very hard on this problem. We wrote a script, designed our costumes, learned how to use tools, built a computer, and decorated a backdrop. As a team, we worked together and learned to listen and to respect each other.

In addition, we had to prepare for a spontaneous problem that was given on the day of the competition. During every meeting, we practiced many spontaneous problems, and it helped us learn how to work as a team, to be leaders, and to make decisions under pressure.

Our 15 gram balsa wood structure held over 800 pounds at the state competition!

We can’t wait to compete at the World Finals in IOWA!
