The Project Shine Team from Flagship L-36 of Leadership Greater Huntsville has a service project with the Huntsville-Madison County Senior Center's Center for Adult Day Care (CADC). The Center for Adult Day Care takes care of up to 50 clients Monday through Friday who are either developmentally disabled or suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s. Clients range in age from 18-92 years old. Julie Born is the CADC director.

The outdoor area that serves this group needs a makeover. There are flooding and drainage problems, a lack of shade, issues with safe access for clients (uneven ground), and sufficient seating. The Shine Team has visited multiple times over the past several weeks to determine the scope of work and to decide how much we are able to accomplish in the timeframe given us.

We propose to do the following:

Re-landscape the area that is prone to flooding, which requires moving flower boxes and existing flower beds, redirecting gutters and drains, grading the yard and installing French drains to help with runoff. This portion of the project will be done with in-kind donated labor and services.

Phase Two of the project is to have two motorized awnings installed on two adjacent exterior walls which will provide approximately 400 square feet of shade for the clients. We will also provide seating with built-in storage for outdoor games and equipment in this area. Additionally, we will replace the chain link adjacent to the wooden fence that only extends along part of the yard area with a matching wood fence to provide a better sound barrier for the noisy HVAC equipment. With the assistance of the Senior Center's art teachers, clients, and staff, we will add flower boxes, outdoor art panels of various sizes to be completed by CADC clients and outdoor wall games to the fence to make the space both beautiful and interactive. Additionally, we plan to add two outdoor picnic tables, flower boxes with drainage and a portable bocce set to provide seating and other activities for the clients. Outdoor speakers (Bluetooth) and two ceiling fans to circulate air under the porch will also be installed.

Funding for the project will be provided by in-kind sources as well as a campaign to raise funds through the Senior Center web page using a GoFundMe giving opportunity. Both the Senior Center staff and the Leadership Huntsville Shine Team will promote this fundraising effort and solicit in-kind gifts. We will prioritize items based on the funding and donations supplied. The team also anticipates recruiting local Boy Scout troops and others (spouses, friends, and families of clients) to assist with the labor needed to complete the project.
