Sipes Family Update

Last Thursday my best friend, Monica and her husband Zach had their worlds turned upside down. Their 7 month old son, Sammy, fought RSV and a double ear infection a couple weeks ago. Sammy continued to show signs of sickness and after multiple visits to the Dr. and rounds of medication, it was only getting worse. Last Thursday Monica took him back to the Dr., and while he was there he had a seizure. They transported him by ambulance to Rush in Aurora and from there he was transported by ambulance to Rush in Chicago. After many tests and procedures they finally got some answers Saturday morning stating that his double ear infection was so intense that it spread to the bone behind his ear and into his bloodstream. This has a 1% chance of happening. They decided to start proper medication and schedule ear tubes to be put in to get rid of the inflammation. Unfortunately, Sunday morning he took a turn for the worst and Sammy had another seizure that lasted a half hour. They moved him back to ICU on oxygen where after more tests they found out that he had meningitis in the brain. After a CT, within the hour, a team of doctors booked the OR and took Sammy in for brain surgery in order to take the puss out that was infecting an area of his brain. With lots of prayers, Sammy held strong through surgery, and is now in recovery. Sammy has a long road to recovery and will be in the hospital for multiple weeks where he will be receiving medication, going to physical therapy, meeting with neurologists and continuing to beat this infection. At this time, Zach and Monica have not left Sammy’s side and will continue to take the time off of work to be with their baby while he mends.

The Sipes’ have had family, friends and co-workers ask how they can help get them through this difficult time. After much thought and consideration, they thought it was best to if anyone would like to help they could send a monetary donation through Venmo. They want 100% of anything to go towards Sammy’s recovery so that he can get the best care available. He has an amazing big brother and sister anxiously waiting for him to get better and come home!
