My name is Rachel Garibaldi, I have my husband Carlos, and 3 beautiful boys Luis(7), Carlos(6), and Joaquin(4). In the past week our entire life has been turned upside down, it has already been a 2 year battle with SMA Syndrome for me trying to find the right doctors and work to get the money to pay for them. My children and husband have watched me rapidly deteriorate over 2 years from a healthy adult to not even being able to hold food down on any given day. SMA syndrome is very rare and it is a compression syndrome where part of my intestine is compressed between the aorta and SMA arteries making it hard for anything to pass through and causing a ton of other GI problems. As of Tuesday the 30th I was admitted to the hospital and rapidly transferred to a hospital in Denton as they were the only hospital with the doctors needed, because the renal (kidney) vein had gotten caught in the compression and was closed causing my kidney and vein to overflow with blood and excess to the point of near failure. This new compression called Nutcracker syndrome. So I was rushed to the first surgery where they attempted to drain the excess and place a stent which was unsuccessful, so into another surgery where they removed the stent and completely rerouted the vein to avoid the compression, which was successful but the recovery is long and then still may end up needing another major surgery for the SMA syndrome. Everything happened so fast that we had no time to prepare, we had just gotten to a stable spot with paying bills and doctors and now we have completely lost my income and I am bound to my hospital room for the foreseeable future. I hate to leave my husband to struggle with everything alone, not only does he now have to be mom and dad, but he also has to find a way to keep up without my income. I’m starting this fundraiser with the hopes of at least raising 2 months worth of bills to help him get a head start since he will also have to pay for the medical bills and everything our children need on top of the regular bills. I tried to explain everything as best I can and I hope you can understand the emergent need for any help and prayers during this extremely difficult time. The funds will be strictly used for monthly bills which total roughly 4000 per month. And the help would be such a blessing for us as I’m really unsure of how else I can help my family at this time when confined to my hospital bed.
