Medical and Rehab Expenses for David Cheek
At this point, most are aware of the situation involving my dad, David Cheek. He was playing with his grandkids at the lake on Father’s Day, hit his head in the shallow water, and immediately lost feeling from his neck down. He was face down in the water for some minutes, and on his last breath was fortunately turned over on his back by the kids who thought he was playing. He was able to yell for my brother to help, and was ultimately airlifted to UNC Hospital. He underwent surgery to remove a bone to decompress his spine. This was a preventative surgery from things worsening, not a solution to the problem. Only time and rehab will hopefully get dad back on his feet and independent again. We are not ones to ask for anything, however, the business that is the American healthcare system is a difficult financial burden to overcome. Dad will be in the UNC hospital rehab program for 7-14 days, with an additional year of rehab at home. If you know dad, you know that he is as tough as they come...and can’t sit still! With that combination and his determination, we are hopeful that he will regain feeling and control of his body. Him not playing with his grandkids and walking himself out on the beach is not an option.
Any contribution that can be made to help cover medical expenses is greatly appreciated. We have been overwhelmed by the love and support shown to our family during this time. It really proves just how special of a person he is and what he means to us, as well as everyone that knows him.
