Translator's livelihood destroyed by AB5 law
Donation protected
As an independent contractor I have been a freelance translator & interpreter in California for over 20 years, a member of the American Translators Association. It took me 20 years of hard work to build up my clientele, and one signature to lose it all on January 1, 2020, by the then-new labor law, Assembly Bill 5 (AB5). The effects of AB5 have been devastating on our industry, in 600 professions total, and on me personally. My 50+ agency clients would not hire me as an employee and I was no longer contracted to service my clients as an independent contractor unless I left California. The financial and administrative burden has been tremendous. I received cut-off notices from my clients just before Christmas 2019, and already lost most of my livelihood overnight. Then Covid hit in 2020. Lawmakers made no exemption for translators and interpreters initially, only 9 months later when it was too late. This destructive and nonsensical law takes "free" out of freelance. I am asking for help to raise enough to survive this immediate and ongoing threat to my livelihood. I will be very grateful for your support.
