Help Me Get a New Electric Wheelchair

Donation protected
Hi everyone, my name is Abbie. Recently, I had an accident while in my electric wheelchair due to an unsafe drop kerb, which caused me to be thrown out of my wheelchair. Unfortunately, my chair is severely damaged and is beyond repair. I'm reaching out to ask for your help in raising funds to purchase a new powerchair so I can regain my mobility and independence.

On 07/08/2024, I was wheeling along the path on Mill Road in Cambridge and I had an altercation with a dropped kerb that was uneven and poorly maintained. The front wheels of my powerchair got stuck in the gaps between the bricks, causing me to be thrown forward. My powerchair is so damaged from the fall that the front wheels snapped off entirely. Once the adrenaline started to wear off, pain began to set in and has been getting worse since. My whole body hurts, and I’m struggling to use on my crutches due to severe wrist pain and my spine is extremely sore.

Electric wheelchairs are incredibly expensive, and unfortunately, I don’t have the funds to replace mine on my own. My powerchair is essential for my daily life, allowing me to get around independently and safely.

In the past, I didn’t go through NHS wheelchair services because I had funds to purchase my own powerchair and didn’t need to rely on NHS funds and waiting times. However, now that it is broken and beyond repair, I don’t have the funds to buy another one. I’ve looked into all my options, but without money, there isn’t much I can do. I’m feeling devastated and exhausted.

My GP and I spoke today and explored the possibility of a referral to NHS wheelchair services, but this process can take weeks, and even then, I may not qualify for an electric wheelchair. I’ve also been researching grants and charities that might be able to help, but those processes can also take a long time. I have also put a complaint in with Cambridge City Council, but I’m not sure if they will financially help with my wheelchair situation. I’m really upset at the thought of not having my freedom for the rest of the summer, and I’m particularly anxious because I have a family holiday in the UK planned for October. I desperately want to have the ability to enjoy this trip and to participate fully in life again.

I’m asking for your support in helping me raise some funds to cover the cost of a second hand electric wheelchair. Every donation, no matter how small, will bring me one step closer to regaining my independence. I know times are hard with the cost of living crisis, so please only donate if you feel able to afford it. Even just sharing this with your network would mean the world to me. I’m so grateful for any help you can provide, and I promise to keep everyone updated on my progress.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to read my story and for any support you can offer. Your generosity will make a huge difference in my life.
