Rutger was a beloved cat who was brought to the Rutgers Gardens in New Brunswick NJ, as a kitten with his littermate to help deter any rodant population in the greenhouses.
Over the course of his 21 years at the gardens he made many friends, both human and feline. He would roam the acres and greet visitors in the warm weather when he was not busy with greenhousework. He was also savy enough to be extra friendly to those picnicing, as there was no feeding schedule in place, and he would rely on the kindness of these visitors.
I began working at the Gardens 12 years ago, and started a regular feeding schedule out of my pocket for Rutger, and the many cats who found thier way by foot or car(my guess would be 70 or so in the past 12 years. Iam not a 401, nor am I wealthy. These cats have passed through, many adopted, or remain currently. With the help ofa few friends I have had them spayed and nuetered over the years, had medical treatment when situations arose, flea and tic prevetion, and daily food . All of these expenses continue to accumulate as new cats either show up or resident ones need medical attention
In Rutgers name, and memory I would like to start an Annual Go Fund Me campaign to help offset the cost for feeding and medical treatment for the friends
of Rutger that he accepted into the Gardens(his home).
So every dollar helps, and goes directly to the animals. Even if you have $5 to spare, it helps. Thank you and please Pass it along. You can also read more about Rutgers life in the link below. Here are just a few of his friends over the years.
