Help bring 50-Humans photo exhibition to life

About me
My name is Abdulazez Dukhan. I am a photographer and CS student at VUB in Brussels. A few years ago, in 2016, I started doing documentarian photography while being stuck in refugee camps in Greece. I wanted to bring another perspective to what was happening, and that is why I created the project, “Through Refugee Eyes  ”. Many individuals worldwide gave me the opportunity to do so by sending me the equipment I needed – which I still use today. I am beyond grateful for that support, and I have taken up photography as a responsibility ever since. I work both individually and with organizations, wherever I feel there are unheard stories to be told or different perspectives to be shown.

About the project
During the summer of 2020, I traveled to 10 different cities and towns in Belgium, meeting 50 refugees and immigrants to document their stories of success, alongside portraits I have taken of each of them. The goal is not to label them, and that is clearly seen by the title: 50-Humans. The goal is to bring some positive stories in a time where negativity takes a lot of our attention, as well as to show their contribution, no matter where they come from or what skin color they have.

The stories focus on three different domains: work, studies, and volunteering. We are trying to redefine integration by showing that it is all about contribution. Someone in their 40s has a different expectation than someone in their 20s. That is why 50-Humans covers the stories of people of different ages and genders from 10 different nationalities. Each one of them contributes in their own way, and each and every one of their contribution counts.

Why fundraising?
The 50 photos and stories will be exhibited for the first time in House of Compassion, Brussels, from 23 April - 6 June.
I would like to print the pictures in excellent quality and a big format. That will give us the ability to have the exhibition travel to all corners of the country. I would also like to have posters printed, to be able to have publicity for the exhibition.

Printing, however, can be very costly if it is done well. And since my means are limited, I would be very grateful for your help. I will be offering the highest transparency on how donations are spent.

Mijn naam is Abdulazez Dukhan. Ik ben fotograaf en CS student aan de VUB in Brussel. Een paar jaar geleden, in 2016, begon ik aan documentaire fotografie te doen terwijl ik in vluchtelingenkampen in Griekenland zat. Ik wilde een ander perspectief brengen op wat er gebeurde, en dat is waarom ik het project "Through Refugee Eyes  " heb gecreëerd. Veel mensen wereldwijd gaven me de kans om dit te doen door me het materiaal te sturen dat ik nodig had - en dat ik vandaag nog steeds gebruik. Ik ben meer dan dankbaar voor die steun, en sindsdien heb ik fotografie als een verantwoordelijkheid opgenomen. Ik werk zowel als zelfstandige als met organisaties, overal waar ik het gevoel heb dat er ongehoorde verhalen te vertellen zijn of andere perspectieven getoond moeten worden.

Over het project
Tijdens de zomer van 2020 reisde ik naar 10 verschillende steden en gemeenten in België, waar ik 50 vluchtelingen en immigranten ontmoette om hun succesverhalen te documenteren, naast portretten die ik van elk van hen heb genomen. Het doel is niet om hen een etiket op te plakken, en dat is duidelijk te zien aan de titel: 50-Humans. Het doel is om enkele positieve verhalen te brengen in een tijd waar negativiteit veel van onze aandacht opeist, en ook om hun bijdrage te laten zien, ongeacht waar ze vandaan komen of welke huidskleur ze hebben.

De verhalen focussen op drie verschillende domeinen: werk, studie en vrijwilligerswerk. We proberen integratie te herdefiniëren door te laten zien dat het allemaal om bijdragen draait. Iemand van in de veertig heeft andere verwachtingen dan iemand van in de twintig. Daarom brengt 50-Humans de verhalen van mensen van verschillende leeftijden en geslachten uit 10 verschillende nationaliteiten. Elk van hen draagt op zijn eigen manier bij, en elke bijdrage telt.

Waarom fundraising?
De 50 foto's en verhalen zullen voor het eerst tentoongesteld worden in House of Compassion, Brussel, van 23 april - 6 juni.
Ik zou de foto's graag in uitstekende kwaliteit en op groot formaat afdrukken. Dat zal ons de mogelijkheid geven om de tentoonstelling naar alle uithoeken van het land te laten reizen. Ik zou ook graag affiches laten drukken, om reclame te kunnen maken voor de tentoonstelling.

Drukken kan echter zeer duur zijn als het goed gedaan wordt. En aangezien mijn middelen beperkt zijn, zou ik u zeer dankbaar zijn voor uw hulp. Ik zal de grootst mogelijke transparantie bieden over hoe de giften worden besteed.

Ik geloof dat uw bijdrage deze tentoonstelling mogelijk kan maken, en dat we een verandering teweeg zullen kunnen brengen. Zelfs een kleine verandering zou mij al heel gelukkig maken. Als u gelooft dat het u ook gelukkig zou maken, overweeg dan alstublieft dit project te steunen en te delen.

À propos de Moi
Je m’appelle Abdulazez Dukhan. Je suis photographe et étudiant en informatique à la VUB à Bruxelles.
Il y a quelques années, en 2016, j’ai commencé à faire des documentaires photographiques quand j’étais bloqué dans un camp de réfugiés
en Grèce. Je voulais montrer une autre facette de la situation et c’est pour cette raison que j’ai décidé de créer le projet « Through Refugee Eyes  ». Un bon nombre de personnes à travers le monde m’ont permis de réaliser mon projet en m’envoyant bénévolement l’équipement dont j’avais besoin et que j’utilise toujours à l’heure actuelle. Je suis plus que reconnaissant de tout ce soutien. Depuis, je vois la photographie comme une responsabilité. Je travaille seul et en collaboration avec des organisations lorsque j’estime que des histoires mériteraient d’être connues ou vues sous un autre angle.

À propos du projet
Durant l’été 2020, je me suis rendu dans 10 villes différentes en Belgique. J’ai pu rencontrer 50 réfugiés et immigrés afin de prendre connaissance de leurs histoires et de réaliser leurs portraits photos.

Le but n’est pas de leur coller une étiquette et c’est d’ailleurs pour cette raison que j’ai choisi le titre bien spécifique de « 50-Humans ».  Au contraire, je souhaite faire connaître des histoires positives dans une période où la négativité peut parfois prendre le dessus en plus d’exposer leur contribution à la société, peu importe leur origine ou leur couleur de peau.

Les histoires sont centrées sur 3 domaines : travail, études et bénévolat. Nous essayons de redéfinir le concept d’intégration en montrant que c’est surtout une question de contribution à la société. Les attentes qu’on en a peuvent varier en fonction de l’âge. C’est pourquoi les histoires des « 50-Humans » englobent différentes tranches d’âge, sexes et 10 nationalités et origines différentes. Chacun d’entre eux a apporté sa pierre à l’édifice d’une manière ou d’une autre et chacune de leurs contributions a son importance.

Pourquoi récolter des fonds ?
Les 50 portraits et histoires seront exposées pour la première fois à la House of Compassion à Bruxelles du 23 avril au 6 juin. J’aimerais que les photos puissent être d’une excellente qualité et d’un grand format. Cela nous permettra d’étendre l’exposition au 4 coins du pays. J’aimerais également pouvoir imprimer des posters en amont afin d’apporter une plus grande visibilité à l’événement.

Les coûts d’impression peuvent s’avérer très élevés lorsque la qualité est présente. Mes moyens sont malheureusement limités c’est pourquoi je serais infiniment reconnaissant si vous pouviez m’apporter votre soutien.
