Lawless Dairy is a small, family-owned dairy farm in Kentucky but it’s not just a farm it’s our home. It’s our life. It’s what we live and breathe to do. But we are now at risk of losing all of that.
This farm has been in my family for 34 years and three, almost four generations. My grandpa, which I always called Papa was a dairy farmer here for 28 years up until his passing in 2015 due to a long, hard-fought battle with leukemia. So now it is our duty to carry on his legacy which we have done up until now but as with any career in the agricultural industry we’ve had our struggles, more so now than ever.
Tragedy struck our farm in 2017 when one of our barns caught on fire, resulting in the loss of almost a year's supply of hay and many other supplies.
Another major incident that put us under was bull breeding issues. We purchased a breeding bull to be used as a herd bull, from a reputable breeder. After a few months of having him in the herd we had a routine pregnancy check of cows that should’ve been bred but all were still open (unbred). The bull turned out to never breed a cow and left us with a year of no calf crop and low milk production causing us to sink further in.
But even though we have faced many trials and tribulations we haven’t given up and we don’t plan to!
