Please take a moment to read my post, donate if you are able to, and pray, pray and pray some more! We have a community member who needs our immediate help. She’s in a tough spot. Tonya Bennett has lived in Rockwall since hurricane Katrina. She has a son who is a senior at RHS and she is known by so many kids as momma Bennett. She has been Involved with football since her son was in peewee ball. Tonya has stage 4 terminal cancer. Cancer is winning...but she is a fighter! This struggle has been going on for a while. Back in June, her rent was raised an additional $500/month. Due to medical and normal bills, Covid and limited income, her rent has continued to be paid each month but not the increased portion. Tonya has spent more time in the hospital this last month, than she has been home. During this time, an eviction hearing was put on her door. She missed it due to hospitalization, which resulted in a default judgement being granted to the landlord by the Justice of the Peace. As of 2 days ago, she has until 11/11 (this Wednesday) to be out, or they will put her belongings out and change the locks. This has been their residence and home for 6 years, which means accumulation, memories and hard work by this family. While she has good days and bad days, it is virtually impossible for Tonya to move at this time. While there are medical and other needs, keeping a roof over their heads is paramount. I am wondering how it is possible to evict someone who is on hospice, and find it incomprehensible that someone would actually do this! Her son is a gem! He is sweet, polite and strong. He has great grades, and the list goes on and on. Imagine with me, the weight that he has on his shoulders. It is his senior year, he is not able to help his mom get better, and he is losing the house he grew up in. Tonya and her son are feeling overwhelmed, and feels like everything is out of their control. This family just needs a miracle. Tonya’s focus is on her son’s well-being at this time, but she needs to be able to breathe easier, minimize stress and reserve her energy by not having to worry about where to go and how to move in her current condition. Tonya’s son must finish school in Rockwall with the help of his support system. A big cloud needs to be lifted from this little family. I am appealing to you as a friend, parent, child, sibling and community member; please donate whatever you can! Every dollar will make a difference, and time is of the essence! If you know Tonya, then you know just how fiercely determined and private she is. I am asking on her behalf in a gesture of love and care. Jackson and the countless kids in our community are her world. Please help me to help her at this time.
