Nix Kicks Sarcoma

Our dear friend, Kim Nix, who has dedicated her life to helping others, is now facing a tough battle and we want to step in to help her. While preparing for her licensing exam and excited to start her next phase in subspecialty medical training, Kim was diagnosed with a rare, highly aggressive cancer of the tissue called an extra-skeletal osteosarcoma in her left leg. Kim will need to undergo three cycles of chemotherapy before surgery (neo-adjuvant care), an extensive lower leg surgery with significant rehabilitation, and three cycles of chemotherapy after surgery (adjuvant care).

Fortunately, the goal is to cure this cancer. Kim is taking time off her work as a doctor in training and switching roles to become a patient to fight this fight. As a result, she will delay starting her subspecialty training. Although the exact timeline is unclear, her oncology team estimates she will be off work for 10 months.

While Kim is supported by her family, friends and her devoted partner of five years, Michael, there are many unexpected costs associated with this illness in a young person - medications, fertility preservation, medical equipment, and the cost of time off work.
