The Starkey Family

As some of you may already know there is a family that I hold dear to my heart that is suffering right now. Many of you ay already know the Starkey family, David and Donna, and Sarah Grace. David Starkey was recently diagnosed with Cancer. It is with a heavy heart that I have to say that he may not have much more time here with his family. It sadness me to think that such a genuine person with such a sweet soul, some how fell through the cracks of our healthcare system. This is a man who built his business and worked nearly everyday of his life side by side with his wife to provide for his family. They never asked for handouts or assistance and the one time they needed help seems like everyone failed them. It upsets me deeply that David was made to feel like no one (healthcare proffessionals) cared about him or what was going to happen to him, or that he was suffering in pain. He was made to feel like he wasnt even a person and didnt deserve to be treated better. While in the hospital he was told by the doctor (without his wife or any family present)that he had turmoil cancer. He was then left all alone in his hospital room, given discharge papers and told to call his wife to pick him up. Basically in his own word he said "they just Kicked me to the curb". David and Donna where married in 1977 and have been inseparable ever since. They have ate, slept and worked side by side for 37 years so you can only imagine the devastation Donna is dealing with. They were referred to Winship Emory in Atlanta. It was there that what little bit of hope they had left, was crushed by a doctor that exsuced himself to take a phone call in the middle of the visit and remained on the phone for several minutes (during this 8 minute visit). Only for him to tell then there was nothing he could do! This was after he took a large payment for this visit. This doctor made them feel like they weren't even worth his time...but had no problem taking their payment! He was sent home from all of these places without any information, resources, or guidance. Basically he was sent home to die and Donna was left to figure out how to take care of the love of her life whose health was rapidly deteriorating. So not only does Donna have to cope with watching her husband slowly slip away from her and trying to make him as comfortable as possible, she has to worry about closing the shop, medical bills, everyday living/house bills, and what she is going to do without him. Life as she know it has changed in every aspect. So I am asking all of you to show them that people do really care! David and Donna are good, genuine hard working people that have never asked for anything and always got by happy with what they had. I visited David this past week and he told me that if someone came to him and said. You will have 37 years married to the love of your life, have a beautiful daughter, get to work side by side with your wife doing something that you love to do...but in 37 years it wll all be taken away... He said "I would say, where do I sign". Even with all of his pain and suffering he has but one worry......And that is Donna. He knows that he has left Sarah Grace in good hands with her husband.....But Donna's whole life will never be the same..Please help to ease David's worries and Donna's burdens by donation any amount that you can afford. Every little bit helps and is greatly appreciated!
