Mike's Miracle Recovery
Thank you very much for donating to my fundraising page for Kingston Hospital and its staff during the COVID-19 outbreak. Please can you give generously. The health and well being of staff is a key element of the wider programme of support Kingston Hospital Charity provides.
On the 13th March I was admitted to Kingston Hospital's ICU. I was their very first patient with Covid-19. When I was admitted I was so ill they did not think I would survive. During the six weeks that I was in an induced coma my condition deteriorated. My Oxygen levels were so low I required 100% Oxygen. They told my partner if I was to survive I may have brain damage. Then my heart started playing up followed by my Kidney's failing. I needed to go on to dialysis. Finally they told my partner they would try one more thing and if that failed I would be taken off life support and would die.
Well I amazed them all, I gave a sign of life and that gave them so much hope. They carried on and I woke up stunning everyone. They could not believe I survived. I was extubated and had my Tracheostomy removed. I was stepped down to a rehab ward where I learnt to stand up and took my first few steps. Despite having two embolisms in my lungs and serious mobility issues, muscle wastage and nerve damage, I was discharged home on May 12th, 4 weeks ahead of my planned discharge. I have just celebrated my 50th birthday, a birthday I did not think I would ever see.
The staff have put their own lives on the line to fight this awful indiscriminate virus to save our lives, some even fell ill themselves and unfortunately they even lost some of their own which is so dreadfully tragic. RIP Ken.
I will always be so eternally grateful to all the staff at Kingston for saving my life, with special thanks to the ICU team, Dr Anna Joseph, Sr Jo Walker, the staff of Keats ward, Sr Lotty the ward manager, My consultant Dr Paul O'Mahoney, The Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy staff based on Keats Ward, The wonderful volunteers from PALS and the hospital chaplain Rev Susan Van Berenden who provided my partner with so much support whilst I was in a coma and to me when I woke up. They were all amazing and I can not thank them enough.

During the current crisis, charitable support is helping to enhance the rest areas for doctors, nurses and healthcare workers, as well as ensuring frontline staff have access to healthy snacks and refreshments throughout the day and night.Over the coming weeks, Kingston Hospital Charity will continue to work with the hospital to support the staff. It may also purchase equipment to help patients affected with coronavirus.
