Medical and travel expenses

Written by Jordan - Paula's grandson. My grandma has been in and out of the hospital since July with numerous health issues. She has had 6 admissions to Canton-Potsdam Hospital since July and each time we were told she had an appendicitis on the stump of her appendix (she was told back in the 1970’s that they took her appendix out when they took her gallbladder out) and a small bowel obstruction. They didn’t feel it was necessary to do surgery. The SBO’s cleared up after several days of bowel rest. After the last admission/discharge from CPH, she only got worse. Mom took her to Alice Hyde Medical Center, where she was shipped to Champlain Valley Physician’s Hospital in Plattsburgh, where she had emergency surgery to remove the appendix 14 days ago and she took a turn for the worse and has been intubated, on a ventilator and in critical care since Monday, 9/25/23. She was found to have a bacterial blood infection (Sepsis) and a fungal pneumonia. They were unable to control her blood pressure as well, causing her to be put on two blood pressure medications (those have been stopped, as her BP has normalized.) We are hoping the tube can be removed soon. This is day 10 of her being on the ventilator. Yesterday, she had an Interventional Radiology procedure in that she had two drain tubes put in. She is continuing to make progress each day but has a long road to recovery. We are giving her as much of a fighting chance as possible, as we know that is what she would want! Those who know grandma know that she would do absolutely ANYTHING for anyone and never ask for anything in return. She will always be my hero!

Mom has been out of work for two weeks now and today we had a family meeting with the doctors/nurses, it looks like grandma still has a LONG road to recovery. Mom expects to be out of work for at least another month.
