Building Houses in Pujili, Ecuador

I have recently been accepted to participate in a volunteer trip to Ecuador this June with an organization called Help Learn Discover (HLD). For the past nine years, this student-driven organization has coordinated volunteer projects for university students in Ecuador, including participating in hospital rotations and building homes for underprivileged families.

Last year, students with HLD were able to help build 21 homes, at approximately $5000 each. This year our goal is to surpass the help provided in the past and build 22 homes. In order to achieve this goal we must fundraise! 

My motivation for participating in this opportunity is driven by my interest in the medical field and my desire to travel. I think that as citizens of a privileged country, it's our responsibility to give back in whatever way we can. Building houses is an excellent way to help support a community that survives below the poverty line. In addition, I am excited by the opportunity to discover a different part of the world as I am immersed in Ecuadorean culture. I think it is important to gain a larger perspective of how others live to broaden my worldview, and I expect to have many new experiences that help shape my beliefs and enrich my character.
