In a matter of hours our family’s world was flipped upside down and we were all in complete shock. On Christmas eve 2018 our 8-year-old niece, Danica, was not feeling well and was complaining about nausea and a headache. She went to sleep and then woke up a few hours later early Christmas morning and the nausea and headache were getting worse, so her parents took her to the hospital emergency room. At first, the hospital thought it was a virus but due to a guardian angel nurse, they decided to send Danica in for a CAT scan just to make sure. That was the moment everything changed, the results showed a 3 cm lesion on her brain. As soon as they saw the lesion they called for a helicopter to pick Danica up and airlift her to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).
CHOP ran some tests and determined, surgery was needed. Two days later, Danica was taken in for surgery that lasted most of the day to remove the tumor from her brain. She spent 2 weeks in the hospital with surgery, recovery, physical therapy and her parents speaking with doctors to develop the course of treatment needed for level 4 brain cancer. Finally, being released from the hospital, Danica was able to celebrate Christmas and her 9th birthday at home with family and return to school for a few hours a day.
On January 30, Danica started her first day of radiation treatment, doing 30 treatments of radiation every day Monday through Friday. Even though radiation is complete, her fight continues. Danica started stem cell harvesting & her first round of Chemo on April 15 spending over two weeks admitted to the hospital and will now begin her second round May 15. Each cycle of chemo she will be admitted to the hospital for a minimum 15 days.
My brother, John and my sister in-law, Jen, have been staying in the hospital every day (sleeping there as well) each time Danica is admitted. To say the least, this is mentally, physically and financially exhausting to all of them. Please continue to keep prayers, and good vibes coming for Danica. She is a strong little girl.
