Moms medical expenses
Donation protected
On the morning of June 27th mom was walking out on the deck to feed the birds. When she went to close the door her foot slipped in to a 2 inch space between the deck boards and she fell up to her knee degloving her calf. After screaming for some time, our dad finally found her and tried to pull her out but she was stuck. He ran to get a hammer and pry bar only to find out the boards were screwed down. He then ran to get a saw and cut the board on either side of her leg. After several attempts he was able to free her leg and get her to the car, driving her to the ER in Canton. They wrapped her leg lightly and brought her by ambulance to the ER in Sioux Falls. After 11 hours and nearly no pain medicine they were finally able to make room in the OR to repair her leg. The surgeon repaired it to the best of his ability but said her skin, having lost its blood supply for such a long period of time, may need a skin graft or flap to repair that area. (We will update this post soon.) We did find out that even though the wound looks like it is only part of her calf, the entire calf including the area under the skin did deglove. The good news is that her calf muscle and achilles tendon were still intact. She now has a wound vac on her leg as well as a boot to stabilize her entire lower leg from moving or bending. She is needing the use of a walker to help support her leg. We don't know how long she will be immobilized as it all depends on the health of that skin.
The hospital called around to see if there was a rehab place/nursing home that had a bed available for her as she will need 24 hour care for the next few weeks. There was nothing available anywhere! Our family talked it over and decided to bring her home and do home heathcare, however they only come for an hour a day, 3 times a week. That means all of us kids and dad will have to figure out how to have someone with her all the time.
When we bring mom home, she won't be able to get upstairs to her bedroom or the bath/shower room, so we're going to have to figure out sleeping and bathing arrangements. The plan is to get her a lift chair to sleep in and place it on the main level. However we are still figuring out bathing options for their house. Recovery will be an extended period of time with wound care and rehab, some in their home and some in Sioux Falls.
We are uncertain of how extensive her medical expenses will be, as they switched insurances in January, as well as out of pocket expenses and the added trips to Sioux Falls for appointments. She also will not be able to cook, so we are checking into some type of "meals on wheels" or other meal assistance program but may need to convert that as well.
Ultimately both of our parents are retired and live on a fixed income and cannot afford any extra expenses. So we are asking for help with medical bills, any additional expenses and if by chance there's anything left over, we plan to repair their deck.
