The Project

WHEN PLANET EARTH BELONGS TO WOMEN, WHO WILL FIGHT FOR THE RIGHTS OF MEN?

Cast adrift in the darkest reaches of outer space, two women awake to discover Earth is no longer the home they knew and their mission -  to save mankind from extinction, is soon going become a bigger battle than they ever could have imagined.

In the breaking dawn of “Fourth Wave Feminism”, Shady Dolls Theatre Company present their provocative new play exploring exactly what it could mean to finally achieve “equality”.

Shady Dolls Theatre Company is looking for funding to support the rehearsal, production and accompanying workshops of 252AM (After Man), a new Feminist play written by Rebecca Pollock. The project consists of confirmed performances at the VAULT Festival from 17th – 21st February and the University of South Wales on 24th February. To accompany the show, we are committed to providing workshops and post show talks on issues of contemporary Feminisms and gender representation in theatre. We are also applying for funding from other sources and hope this may help gain enough money to pay the people working for us - this has always been a priority of the Company.

At the heart of the project is the development of a new show exploring current dialectics of Fourth Wave
Feminism through the style of Science Fiction, a form that has historically provided a platform to present
shifting ideas on race, gender and sexuality. Since it’s inception, our company’s mission has been to produce
new, challenging work exploring notions of Femininity and Feminisms for both company and audiences with a
specific emphasis on generating diverse, interesting roles for female practitioners.

With an original score played live and immersive, responsive lighting design, the Company have created a bold, original play that is a homage to the brilliance of Sci-Fi in provoking questions and challenging perceptions, but also offering opportunities for extraordinary interstellar style!

The Company

Shady Dolls Theatre Company has been producing new writing since 2005. Our mission has been to make
inclusive work that challenges and provokes notions of Femininity and Feminisms for both company and
audiences.

Shows to date have included critically acclaimed premieres of The Erotica Project (Greenwich Playhouse), Homestead (Courtyard Theatre), The Spoils (Edinburgh, Cuenca Festival, Valencia and the Arcola Theatre) and Deadstock & Ornery Tale at Rose Bruford and the Blue Elephant Theatre.

Rebecca Pollock is also currently working with Rose Bruford College and The University of Edinburgh to develop a show about the history of women in science, with staff and students from both Institutions in April 2016.

We have collaborated closely with a range of practitioners including Steve Dykes (playwright and director - 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010), Nesta Jones (director - 2005), Paul Englishby (award winning composer - 2009) and theatre maker Chris Goode, who worked with us as a writing facilitator and director on our 2010 season.
