Scholarship for Nicaraguan Student to attend Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School in Ghent, NY, USA
Dear friends, family and neighbors,
I am starting this Go-Fund-Me campaign for Maria Eugenia, a girl I got to know last winter, when I taught music on Ometepe Island in Nicaragua. She will graduate from High School this December as a grade A student, who is pushing herself very hard academically and would love to continue studying.
Improving English language skills is one of her main interests, as it is essential to achieve any further professional career in her country. Unfortunately, the quality of Nicaragua’s educational system is lacking and it may limit her.
Because of this and for a new experience away from home, I thought of helping her to come study at Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School and she loved the idea. She writes in her little biography: “I would like to continue my studies in order to help my country and my family.”
Maria Eugenia comes from a small and very rural island community. The opportunity of attending school at Hawthorne Valley would be a life changing and expanding experience for her.
Initially she was going to be sponsored out of the proceeds of the business of a common friend who owns a hotel on Ometepe Island. He knows Maria Eugenia well, since her mother has been a long time worker at the hotel. Our friend strongly recommended her for this experience. However, the political situation became rather dire in Nicaragua last March; tourism came to an abrupt halt and he has had no income since then. He sadly needed to withdraw his offer. I am committed to host and feed her, as well as carry the general responsibility for her, including arranging her travel from Nicaragua. Since Maria has been really looking forward, I decided to try the route of the Go-Fund-Me possibility and hope that together we can raise the money needed to bring her here.
The estimated expenses are:
Passport $180
Visa $250
Travel for Maria $600
School tuition $950
Extra English classes $350
Class trips $200
Pocket money $300
Winter cloths $170
–––––––
TOTAL $3,000
I thank each one of you who can contribute to this effort with whatever amount is possible for you.
With warm greetings,
Monica Talaya Amstutz
