This is Joey Potter. Future cricket champion, model big brother and quite possibly Moorooka’s funniest little man.
At just 6 months old, Joey was diagnosed with cancer. He had surgery to remove a Wilm’s tumour and his right kidney. After 6 months of chemo, he was in remission.
Sadly, just after Joey’s second birthday, the cancer returned.
Joey had surgery to remove the tumour, half of his liver, and about a third of his diaphragm. It was an extremely challenging operation with complications, requiring massive blood transfusions and a prolonged time in intensive care. They were told he may have an acquired brain injury and damage to his organs. Thankfully he was telling knock knock jokes again within a few days.
Adding to this trauma, Joey’s post-operative tests initially reported that the tumour was benign, we were told that Joey was cancer free. However, further tests confirmed that the tumour is in fact the same type of malignant Wilm’s Tumour that he had as a baby.
Joey is looking ahead to at least 30 weeks of intense chemotherapy and all the side effects that go along with it.
The overall survival rate for high-risk relapsed Wilm’s tumours is 50%. Our Joey will be one of those who survives.
Joey’s parents Jack and Kitty are mustering all of their emotional strength to support Joey, his sister Juna and each other on this uncertain journey.
