Help Disabled Rowland Heights Couple Repair Car
Donation protected
Diane Keifer and her husband have been living without their car for over a year...and stuck in their Rowland Heights apartment, unable to do simple tasks like go to the grocery store or make it to doctors appointments.
When they bought their 2004 Chrysler Sebring in 2012, they replaced the engine and thought the car would run smoothly after that...but the problems kept popping up and over a year ago, their water pump went out. They were quoted $1200-$1440 for the repairs and have been trying to find a mechanic or auto repair shop that will take small monthly payments ever since.
Diane says they have been missing too many doctors appointments and her health is now suffering. She has COPD, arthritis throughout her entire body, and takes insulin for her diabetes. Her husband has epilepsy, mental health issues, and a muscle disorder. They say they can't afford to take the ACCESS van because it's $7 roundtrip and Diane can't stand for long periods of time waiting.
They contacted KTLA's Problem Solvers asking for help finding an auto repair shop that would take payments and when the story aired, Cindy from Kingdom Auto Repair in Garden Grove offered to help.
On Friday, Diane's car was towed to the shop where Cindy will donate the labor for the repairs. But in order to drive, Diane also needs to pay around $400 to get her tags current and we would like to get them $600 to pay for car insurance for the year. (AAA estimate).
Diane says they both live on social security and barely survive right now and often times go without medication because they can't afford it.
We will post updates to the estimate from Kingdom Auto Repair when we get them next week.
