March 21, 2016 was supposed to be a joyous day in my family, it was supposed to be a celebration of my older brother's 31st birthday. That was not the case, and we got the news that my mother, Celina, has cancer in her eye.
My mother had just went to the optometrist on Friday, March 18,because she was having problems with her vision in her right eye. The optometrist found that my mother's retina was detached. He immediately referred her to a specialist in Salt Lake City for an appointment on Monday, March 21. The specialist in Salt Lake City found a large mass in the back of my mother's eye when viewing the detached retina. He ran some tests and diagnosed her with Large Choroidal Melanoma, an aggressive form of Ocular Melanoma. It was a complete shock to my entire family, seeing as my mother, Celina, was supposed to be going to Salt Lake City for a detached retina.
My mother is now scheduled for an enucleation (complete removal of the right eye) this Thursday, March 24. My entire family has been hoping and praying that the cancer has not metastized into other parts of her body. My mother, Celina, will also most likely need chemotherapy after her surgery. She also will be needing a prosthesis, which will cost thousands of dollars.
My mother is very loved, and I know she has many people that are praying for her right now. Any contribution, big or small, will help immensely. Thank you and God Bless.
