Help fund great Philly content on Philebrity!

Originally launched in 2004, Philebrity is Philly’s original cityblog. Which is to say: It’s a digital-first magazine about all that it is to live in Philly and be a Philadelphian.

And right now, we are relaunching the site during a time of massive change in the city, and we could use your help.

Where Your Donation Goes:

— most importantly, freelance writers. We want Philebrity to be a home to a multiplicity of voices, all creating thoughtful and interesting pieces about this city — the kind you might read in The New Yorker’s Talk of The Town or Paris Review Daily. We’ve already got a few great writers on the line, so your donation will take effect in the form of articles and podcast content pretty much immediately.

— to keep our editors fed and safe. We have other hustles, but to do this work takes human hours that we’d really like to be doing more of this work in.

— promoting the site to gain more readers! This will take the form of: boosted social media posts and good old analog things like posters and stickers.

Why Philebrity?

Because there’s nothing else like it.

Literally. When the site first started nearly 18 years ago, it existed in a media ecosystem that included several daily newspapers, two alternative weeklies, and a multitude of glossy magazines, blogs, and other things.

Somehow Philebrity has outlived a great many of those outlets, as well as our old revenue model. During its earlier iteration, Philebrity cultivated an advertising base around venues, live events, and other local advertising that has since been chomped up by — you guessed it — Facebook and Instagram. In response, we’re currently working on a new revenue model that, by the fall, will include limited ads on the site and a membership platform that we’re really excited about.

Today, we need you to help us get that initial lift done. We invite you to become a part of the adventure. We’re in an odd moment in local media, but our stats and what we’re hearing back from real humans tells us that there’s more of an audience for the site than ever before.

Here are some recent things we’ve posted that we’re proud of, and get to the feeling we’re trying to create most with the site.
