Estefany Got Into University! Help w expenses?
Estefany Got Into University!
Please, lets help her w/ expenses!
This fall, thanks to the help of many of you, Stef completed her two year
university prep program, finishing second in her class! And now, with a little more help, she’ll be able to claim the tuition free spot she won at University of
Guatemala, San Carlos, and earn her degree to become a registered nurse! I’m so proud of how far she’s come, and from such humble beginnings. And we’re so
grateful to those of you who were able to help give her this opportunity. Thank
you! And now, I hope we can help her finish the job!
A few years ago, my friends Lorna and Imre Kepes and I noticed Estefany as a real standout among her fellow students at Colorando mi Futuro, a local family-
helping school here in San Pedro, La Laguna, Guatemala, founded by Miranda
Talbott-Pope. Estefany speaks with confidence and intelligence, and shines
among her peers. She has terrific leadership abilities and has a great kindness in
the way she helps her classmates, all the while exhibiting humility and a charming poise. It was clear to all of us that Estefany needed to go on to university to
realize her potential. And now, it looks like she will!
At Guatemala University, tuition will be free for Estefany!
But she needs just a little more help…
Estefany’s mom, Lola Gonzoles, is an amazing, loving, bright, traditional
Guatemalan woman, who on her own has raised her wonderful children. With
few options for employment, Lola has supported her kids and now a grand child, mostly trough odd jobs and by doing bead work for tourist souvenirs. But tourism here has been off these last few years, partly because of a strained relationship
between Guatemala and the Trump administration, and especially this year as
covid 19 has brought tourism nearly to a halt all over the world, and here in
Guatemla. But Lola has always tried to set an example for her kids that hard work and perseverance will succeed in the long run.
And now, Estefany has won a tuition free spot at University! But of course, there will still be living expenses, books and supplies, school uniforms, and so forth, all
beyond the reach of Estefany and her mom. Stef has shown she knows how to live frugally as a student, and she’s ready to jump back into that routine for 2021-22,
so she can get her nursing degree and start earning an income to help her family. We’ve put together a budget of $3,500 per each of the two years, and have
already received a commitment of $1,000 per year from a very generous
benefactor. So it is our hope that we can raise just $2,500 more each of the next
two years. We’ve done the same before, with generous small donations from so many of you, and I am truly hoping our dear friends from over the years will help
just a little again in ’21 and ’22.
Please help us give this remarkable young woman a bridge to the wonderful future she deserves!
